HOMES ABANDONED.
Terrific Thunderstorm in Melbourne. SEVERAL PEOPLE MISSING. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received December 20, 12.50 p.m.) MELBOURNE, December 20. The Christmas Day festivities were suddenly ended in Melbourne late in the afternoon, when a terrific thunderstorm broke over the city and suburbs. City streets were flooded, and traffic dislocated. It was nearly an hour before the trams could leave the citv. Water rushed over- the bonnets of motor-cars, hundreds of cars being stranded in the streets. More than GOO families were forced to abandon their homes at Kensington, when a canal outlet from the Moonee Ponds Creek broke its banks. Last night thousands of tons of earth and water swept through ten streets in the low lying area adjoining the creek. The damage was very heavy and an early morning check showed that several people were not accounted for.
