THE WOOL TRADE.
“Year Ending in Spirit of Cheerfulness.” (Received December 26, noon.) LONDON, December 24. Mr W. P. Devereux, representative of the Australian woolgrowers, reports that in the wool markets the year is ending in a spirit of cheerfulness, but, with the publication of the rosters of sales and the quantities likely to be available, has come the increased realisation that the shortage of available supplies will be most severely felt next year, and until September and October no relief can be experienced. This stimulated demand for raw wools is in sympathy with the active demand and advancing values overseas. The market quotations for tops have advanced to replacement cost in all European centres. Cross-bred tops are firmer, some business being done at full market rates. Some new business has been done in cross-bred yarns, which are firm. Machinery activity is well maintained, and the Continental futures markets are fairly active. Quotations in all positions have further improved by 5 per cent.
