A tree was heavily laden with toys and gay balloons, which were distributed by Father Christmas. The children sang several carols and Christmas songs, after which Judith Prins presented Father Christmas with a bouquet of sweet peas and gypsophila.

Elmwood. The end-of-the-year functions in connection with the Elmwood School began on Monday evening with a wellattended school concert. The infant school Christmas party was held on Tuesday afternoon, when Father Christmas paid his time-honoured call. Yesterday afternoon the distribution of prizes to the pupils of the upper standards took place in the assembly hall. Mr G. P. Purnell, chairman of the committee, presided. The opening of the new intermediate school will mean that Shirley will be without its two highest classes. Mr Creary, the chairman of the School Committee. presented the certificates and dux medals. Mr Irwin, the head master, mentioned the work of several silent workers who had provided soup and knitted clothing during the winter. Cheers were called for the staff and for the School Committee. The staff of the Shirley School entertained a number of guests at morning tea on the occasion of the leaving of five of their teachers. Mr Irwin, the head master, eulogised the work of Mr Beattie, the first assistant, who has been on the staff for thirteen years. The excellent results of the Shirley -School in sports and scholastic work were largely due to his untiring interest. Mrs Ironside. Mr Holmes, Miss Paynter and Miss Thomas had also done their share itj making the Shirley School the efficient school it is. Mr Balch, the former head master, spoke highly of the services of these teachers. Cashmere Hills.
