A Warning from Sydney.
Dear Sir,—l read in a recent New Zealand paper that there was a great improvement in Australia. I wish to give this emphatic denial, and I am in a position to know. I left Auckland three months ago and have been unable to get a job of any kind since my arrival here. There are thousands in the same boat as myself. A new arrival from overseas has first to go on the “ dole ” —9s a week for a married man without children. When work is found for him he gets ten hours’ work a week, for which he receives 15s 7d. He has to fill in a statement every fortnight, or is refused work. Living costs more, and the worker in New Zealand is far better off even if he is in camp. So if anyone contemplates coming over here expecting to find employment he should have his return fare. He will quickly be sorry for leaving a better land.—l am, etc., W. J. FAULKNER. Sydney.
