“ Lucky to Escape Gaol,” Says Magistrate. lIAD £156 IN POCKETS. “ You are very lucky to escape being sent to gaol,” said Air E. D. Mosley, S.M., this morning, when he fined Stanley Norman Hodgson £ls and costs for being found intoxicated in charge of a motor-car in Worcester Street on December 9. Hodgson, a hairdresser, 42 years of age, of Cashel Street, pleaded guilty. Ilis license was cancelled for twelve months. For parking his car over the time limit on November 3, he was fined 10s and costs. When arrested, Hodgson had £156 in notes in his possession. Senior-Sergeant Fox stated that at 11.40 p.m. on Saturday Sergeant Moore saw a car being driven erratically down Manchester Street, swerving from side to side. It turned into Worcester Street, missing a fence by inches, and almost colliding with an electric light pole. The car finally came to a stop, and accused was found not to be intoxicated in the ordinary sense of the word, but drunk. “ Accused had £156 in notes in his possession when he was arrested,” said the senior-sergeant. “ Needless to say, he was bailed out.” “ What have you got to say for yourself?” asked the Magistrate. Hodgson: I had a few' drinks, but I was a long way from being drunk. The Magistrate: A man like you ought to be ashamed of yourself, getting “ tight ” in charge of a car. Hodgson explained that he had been out at the races. The Magistrate: That makes it all the worse. You are very lucky to escape beinz sent to gaol. MOTOR-CYCLIST CHARGED. Charged with being found intoxicated in charge of a motor-cycle in Worcester Street on December 9, Allan Alexander, a plate-layer, aged twenty-four, of Omihi, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., this morning. Accused pleaded not guilty, and on the application of the police w’as remanded until to-morrow to enable medical evidence to be given. Bail was allowed in the sum of £25 and one surety of £25. Alexander pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a motor-cycle without a license, and was convicted, sentence being deferred.
