STARLETS’ DISPLAY.

Contributions From Six Provinces. The annual display of articles made and given by the members of the Star Circle towards brightening Christmas for less fortunate children around them is now on view in the Colombo Street windows of Beath and Co., and is causing exceptionally keen interest among all sections of the *community. Cards displayed on the articles show that children from six provinces have pooled their efforts, happy to know that they are helping someone. Thrift and kindness to others are the dominant notes of the exhibition. At the beginning of the year Aunt Hilda set out to show how hard times could be faced without any appeal for funds and with no strain on any particular members. Old stockings, materials left over from Starlets’ frocks, odd buttons, beads, in fact all materials that are usually discarded, have been used; the donations of fur from the Pattison Ede Fur Company were most helpful. An Inspiring Display. Every variety of knitted article and made toy and garment is there, knitted jerseys and pretty aprons, dozens of golliwogs of widely different shapes, elephants, dogs, lambs, pigs, beautifully painted calendars and cards, articles from old tins, sweet boxes from mere nothings, all are happily combined in this inspiring display. Time and ingenuity have been all that was needed on the part of the Starlets. Between 200 and 300 attractive tins of sweets will be packed next Tuesday as a gift towards the Mayor’s appeal, nuts and sweets having been given by the children and empty tobacco tins collected and decorated suitably at intervals throughout the year. The woollen knitted articles have been sent out during the year as they were made, the need in the winter months having been so urgent. The work of the Handy Fingers’ Circle is not this year included in the exhibition. This group specialised in providing gifts for their own families, an essential attitude of self-help being emphasised. Aunt Hilda has received many requests from needy cases, motheis who find themselves faced with Christmas in hospital for themselves or their little ones: relief workers’ wives; crippled and disabled children from everywhere, and a feature of this year's work has been the way in which the Starlets have quietly handed on information that they know Aunt Hilda wishes to have. Cases will be treated in order of urgency, preference in every case being given to sick and deserving cases. The Guiding Note. The best interest of the children themselves is the guiding note of the policy adopted, and no greater proof of wide recognition of the “ Star’s ” children’s organisation could be found than in this display of Christmas gifts. The children of all relief workers are to be helped by the Mayor. The “ Star ” will extend its assistance to cases that do not get help elsewhere.
