GIFTS FOR PRISONERS.
Appeal for Christmas Cheer. A joint appeal for Christmas cheer for the prisoners in Paparua Gaol is now being made by the Revs F. R. Rawle and J. A. Allan, Anglican and Presbyterian chaplains respectively at the prison. They suggest that gifts of tobacco, fresh or dried fruit, cake, chocolate, plum pudding and Christmas cards would prove most acceptable to the men, while gramophone records and illustrated books on science and travel would also be appreciated. In a letter to the editor of the “Star,” Mr Rawle says: “We are venturing to ask your readers to let the men at Paparua know that the outside world has not forgotten them, but is thinking of them kindly and hopefully, and will not punish them twice by cutting them dead when they regain their liberty. The sign and token of goodwill, we suggest, should take the form of Christmas cheer.” Parcels containing donations should be addressed: “ Christmas cheer for the prisoners, c/o the Superintendent, lI.M. Prison, Templeton,” and left not later than Friday, December 22, at the Y.M.C.A. There they will be picked up by the prison lorry. The gifts received will be shared out equally among the men.
