MUSKRAT INVASION.
Pest Causing Much Damage in England. LONDON, November 28. “ The News-Chronicie ” urges the Government to declare war on 100,000 muskrats which are destroying the banks of rivers, and undermining railway tracks, roads and bridges. Only 2950 of the rodents were captured in the last 20 months, at a cost of £1 each. There will be 1,000,000 muskrats in 1934, yet the Ministry of Agriculture declares that the pest is controlled. The Rat Department is blameless owing to lack of funds. The pest could have been eradicated in 1929 at a cost of £SOOO, but it would now cost £5,000,000. because every county in Great Britain has been invaded. The muskrat can swim 35 miles in a day against a strong current. Experts advise studying the methods employed in Germany, where 100,000 muskrats are caught annually by means of gas cartridges and traps.
