SPORTS EVENTS.

Pupils of School for the Deaf. ATHLETIC EXERCISES. The Sumner School for the Deaf held its annual .sports and Christmas party at the school yesterday, when there was a large attendance of past pupils, past teachers and friends. A lengthy' programme of events was carried out, including athletic sports, a gymnastic display, an exhibition of folk dancing and an Indian deportment contest. In the deportment contest the girl pupils, with cups of water balanced on their heads, executed a very exacting series of evolutions, including plank walking and difficult exercises in prone positions. The event was the most entertaining of the day. and (he winner. Flo Pierce, received an ovation. In the junior event. June Ogg won the prize. The Director. Mr T. F. Chambers, with Mrs Chambers, welcomed the guests. The programme and entertainments were in the capable hands of the teaching staff, and members of the house staff under Miss Leary. During the afternoon Mr Chambers congratulated the winners of the prizes on their success and thanked the staffs for their willing assistance during the whole of a long day's sport. On behalf of Mrs Chambers and himself and the j inside and outside staffs of the school he extended to the pupils wishes for a: merry Christmas and a happv New Year. At the Christmas party, after Father Christmas had given every child a present and had presented the prizes, a little girl, Tsobel prysdal*. presented him with a well filled bon-bon.
