STATE OF EMERGENCY.
Spanish Government Fears Republicanism. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MADRID, December 4. A state of emergency has been declared throughout Spain in view of rumours that the Republicans are planning an insurrection in order to prevent the Cortes meeting on December 12. The turbulent election seems to have strengthened the Conservatives, who, it is believed, contemplate the repeal of many of the Republican confiscatory and anti-clerical laws. Crowds badly treated many nuns as they voted. The police deposited all gunsmiths’ stocks at the artillery barracks and apparently are in control of the situation. A general strike is feared to-day, though the Socialists won an electoral victory in Madrid, securing thirteen representatives, compared with four right wing deputies. It is estimated that fortv-two right wing, thirty-one Centre Party and twenty-two Socialists were elected as a result of Sunday’s poll, but no reliable statement is yet possible.
