WORD COMPETITION.

Nearly Two Thousand Entries. BIG TASK FOR JUDGES. When the judges in the “ Star’s ” word-making competition approached their task this morning, they found it a big one. The room set aside for the entries was swamped with parcels and letters of all sizes, bearing postmarks from all parts of the South Island, with an odd one here and there from the North Island. The competition closed yesterday, and it was estimated this morning that nearly 2000 competitors had made a bid for the cash prizes offered by the “ Star ” as Christmas boxes for its reader?. The judges had not been long at work when it was found that a great deal of work had been put into the preparation of the entries. Not satisfied with checking the words with the list provided for their guidance, m?nv entrants had pasted the pictures neatly into books and designed effective covers, the whole making a number of most attractive volumes. The judges are looking forward to further artistic efforts on the part of the painstaking, and it is certain that the magnitude of their task will be compensated for by the interest that lies in it. It is not yet possible to state when the result l ? of the competition will be announced, but every effort will be made to have the prizes sent out to successful competitors in time for Christmas.
