WITNESSES’ EXPENSES.

No Arrangement Made for Payment. When it was found in the Magistrate’s Court this morning that two witnesses had been subpoenaed without arrangements being made for their expenses by the accused, the question of settlement came in for considerable discussion. The Magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley) asked the accused what chance there was of the witnesses being paid. Accused replied; ‘‘A big chance.” The Magistrate said that, as they had come to Court he could compel the witnesses to give evidence: but they need not have appeared unless their expenses had ben tendered. The difficulty was overcome by the witnsses agreeing to forgo their expenses.
