SANDERS CUP.

Irene Wins Three Trials During Week-end. Conditions were good during the week-end for the continuation of the Sanders Cup trials, which are being held to select a boat and crew to represent Canterbury in the Sanders Cup contest, which will take place in February on Lyttelton Harbour. Irene proved to be superior to the other boats and succeeded in winning the three races decided. Jean again made a disappointing showing, while Huia, with a more experienced spinnaker hand, would have done much better. A. large crowd gathered on the Gladstone Pier. There was a cool wind blowing fresh from the south-west. The course was a triangular one, starting from the bend of the Gladstone Pier to a buoy moored off the Kipa Island buoy, thence back to Payne’s quarry buoy and back to the starting mark, three times round. The competitors were: Irene (E. Sinclair), Huia (W. Tissiman), Elfin (T. Hobbs), Avenger (R. Priddy), Colleen (F. Forman) and i Jean (G. Brassell). From a good flying start under spinnakers, Irene secured the lead by a few yards, with Colleen. Elfin, Jean, Avenger and Hula close up, in that order. Sinclair’s charge seemed to sail away from the others, and in a fast run to the buoy off Ripa Island Avenger overtook Irene, rounding ssec ahead. Irene, however, soon overhauled Avenger again. The rest of the boats rounded about 49sec latex. Colleen and Jean were a minute behind in going round. All worked the south shore down to Diamond Harbour, where Tissiman decided to go out more into the middle of the harboux-. Elfin skied her spinnaker and lost a lot of Way. Passing Diamond Harbour, Irene Increased her load to ljnxin. Avenger sailed into second position, with Colleen following, The boats completed the first round as follows:

i When Irene had reached the Ripa Island buoy she had increased her lead to 2nxin 55sec. Irene completed her second round with over 6min lead from Avenger. The boats completed the second round as follows:

Before the race, the Sailing Committee met to discuss a protest by the crew of Avenger. It -was decided to uphold the protest. Yesterday’s Races. .The third race was sailed yesterday morning, starting at 10.47. There was a dead calm at the start and the boats just drifted over the line with the ebb tide in the following order: Avenger, Colleen, Jean. Huia, Irene and Elfin. On reaching Gollan’s Bay the boats picked up a light nor'-east breeze which carried them over to the Ripa Island buoy, which they rounded as follows: Avenger, Irene, Elfin. Jean, Colleen, Hula. Avenger was still leading when ! the run to the pile was completed, with Jean and Irene close at hand. On the beat in the second round Brassell improved his position and was in third place at Ripa Island buoy. Avenger being next, with Irene losec behind. On the run to the pile both Irene and Jean passed Avenger, Jean being first to put about. At the pile Brassell looked like winning, but soon after clearing the mark lie had the misfortune to lose his tiller and lost ground, leaving Irene to win. The finishing times were:

The. fourth race was also won by Irene. The race started at 3.10 p.m. in a steady nor’-east wind. Colleen crossed the line first, closely followed by Ilula, Jean. Irene. Avenger and Elfin.
