“FLYING DOCTOR.”
Man Who Imposed on Coast People. GAOL TERM IMPOSED. Per Press Association. GREYMOUTH, December 4. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Allan Roy Vickers, 38 years of age, with several aliases, was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment on each of four charges of false pretences, the sentences to be concurrent. Accused pleaded guilty to a charge of securing money and goods by means ! of valueless cheques at Westport. The police stated that Vickers had represented that he was a member of the medical profession and that he had been practising in Queensland. Accused had twenty-one convictions for similar offences since 1921. The “ Star’s ” correspondent at Westport telegraphs: Vickers introduced himself to Westport people as Dr Vickers, “ The Flying Doctor.” of Australia. He spent a week or two in Westport in November, being widely entertained and giving the impression that he intended commencing a practice here. He attended the Aero Club meeting, and stated that he intended landing a new aeroplane. It is alleged that several cheques were cashed on Saturday, November 11, the “doctor” leaving later on a trip to Greymouth, where, it is stated, he disappeared. The police, however, traced him to Ross. He is alleged to have an imposing police record as Allen Ray Vickers, alias Charles Edward Bradman, alias Eric Jackson, 38 years of age. described as an Australian school teacher.
