PROTEST AGAINST CUTS.

Unemployed Demonstration Proposed.

Efforts are being made to organise a stop-work demonstration of unemployed as a protest against the cuts in relief pay and the cancellation of rations, according to a statement issued this morning by the Press Committee of the Canterbury Unemployed Workers’ Association.

It was pointed out that the question of the demonstration was referred by the Job Delegates Council of the association .to the men on various jobs, and the delegates reported back on Thursday evening. A final decision in the matter, however, would not be made till Tuesday evening. The proposal is that the demonstration should be held at the latter end of next week. One or two of the larger jobs, it is stated, favour the proposed demonstration. A meeting of unemployed women has been arranged for Monday afternoon, when a proposal will be submitted that the women should form a branch of the Unemployed Workers’ Association. An invitation has been made to representatives of the clergy to attend the meeting, which will be supported by men immediately affected by the cut in rations.
