MAYOR’S WEDDING.
Reception in Melbourne Town Hall. REQUEST BY COUNCIL. (Special to the “Star.”) MELBOURNE, November 20. There was a debate at a meeting of the Melbourne City Council as to where the reception should be held for the wedding of the Lord Mayor, Mr H. G. Smith, to Miss Cy*nthia Brookes on December 6. The Lord Mayor presided and participated in the debate. Mr A. E. Keane moved: ‘‘That this .council congratulates the Lord Mayor on 'his approaching marriage, and requests the bride’s parents to consent to the reception after the ceremony being held at the Melbourne Town Hall.” He said it was unique for a Lord Mayor of Melbourne to be married while in office, and it was desirable, he thought, that the council should suitably mark the occasion by permitting the reception to be held in the Town Hall. Sir H. Luxton remarked that, as the invitations had been issued by the bride’s mother, Mrs N. Brookes, it seemed impertinent for the council to make this suggestion. The bride’s mother had already stated in the invitation where the reception was to he held, and before any suggestion was made by the City Council it seemed an impertinence to carry this motion. “ Personally,” he added, “ I should regard it as an impertinence.” The Lord Mayor pointed out that the wording of the motion made it perfect, ly clear that this motion, if carried, would be a request to the bride’s parents to accept the use of the Melbourne Town Hall for the reception. It was merely a request. Mr Kane explained that the parents of the Lord Mayor’s fiancee had been approached, and they* had approved of the scheme proposed. It was not an impertinence. Sir 11. Luxton accepted the explanation and withdrew his comment. After further discussion Mr Kane’s motion was carried. The Lord Mayor thanked the council.
