TOWN GUARD AS PACER. Our Summer, who made his reappearance at the Waikato Show after a useful spell, ran a very creditable race, and it was only lack of condition that kept him from gaining a place. He went particularly well for a mile and a quarter and he should derive some benefit from the outing. Last season Our Summer proved a very consistent performer, and after being nine times in a minor place succeeded in breaking the spell at the Auckland winter meeting, Being on a handy ntark, he should find races to suit him at Epsom next month. * * * * Though a leading firm of rubbet manufacturers in Melbourne will not agree that balloon tyres on trotting sulkies are an improvement the Americans evidently are of different opinion. It is claimed that one particular horse has wop almost every race this season in a sulky equipped with balloon tyres, going as fast as 2min 2£sec. STILL GOING STRONG. Jewel Pointer is getting through a lot of good work at Otahuhu to prepare him for the Chrismas meeting at Auckland. The son of Logan Pointer has been a remarkable pacer, as he has for seasons been competing with the best in the land, invariably stepping out twice a day, and yet he comes along as jaunty as ever each meeting.-S. August is giving him every care and attention, as he will be the stable representative in the Auckland Trotting Cup. * * * * In reviewing the performances of Prairie King at the Cup meeting at Addington and at Forbury one must conclude that the son of Erin’s King is not a stayer, and that while he may be successful up to a mile and a half, his prospects of winning a distance contest are not bright. Prairie King is a reliable horse, and is an aged gelding trained at Winton by T. Wallis. In suitable classes over twelve furlongs he should be worth following. A BIG TEAM. The Takinini trainer F. Smith is expected to have a team of*nine horses representing the stable at the Auckland Cup meeting (says the Auckland “Star”). He will have representatives in practically all classes, and his Cup candidate will be Pegaway. This fine pacer won the second day’s double 4 t the last meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club', and though it can be anticipated .that. Cup field will be strong, Pegaway is a solid customer and will be one of the. early- favourites. * * * * After winning in a stylish manner on the first day at Dunedin Wise Guy found his task of conceding a similar field 36yds beyond him. His name was mentioned as a prospective place-getter three furlongs from home on the second day, but he faded out at the business end of the race. Even from 36yds behind he was better backed on the second day than when he won off the front of the handicap on the first day. Wise Guy is not an attractive horse, but he has developed plenty of speed and stamina up to twelve furlongs. He is by Real Guy from Wee Audubon, and is trained at Addington by W. A. Howell.

ABOUT ALEXIS. Alexis, who for some time' has been trained at Te Rapa by N. Vernal], is now in A. Flyger’s care at Claudelands. Alexis has been responsible for some very smart trials at Te Rapa, and the manner in which he worked with Our Peter earlier in the season indicated that he should win a race. However, he failed to reproduce his fine efforts under silk, and unless he changes his tactics his new trainer may find it difficult to meet with any more success than Jiis predecessor. * * * * The four-year-old pacer Encounter, who created a good impression at Greymouth when she beat Guy Junior, was seen out in two races at Forbury, but was not prominent in either contest. On the first day she was not in the first ten when the field raced past the stand, and on the second day she was not noticed until nearing the finish. She finished seventh. Her southern form was many removes from her West Coast display. She has not had a great deal of experience, and may have felt the pinch when asked to step out in better company at Dunedin. * * * * S. August did not keep the novice Demand long after the October meeting at Auckland, and returned him to his owner, Mr W. Johnstone. Demand had a lot of speed, but had a habit of crossing his legs when pacing, and more than once he fell while contesting a race. TROTTING FIXTURES. December 1, 2—Winton Jockey Club.
