ANNUAL APPEAL.
St John Free Ambulance Services. It is now over forty years since a free invalid transport service was instituted in Christchurch, under the auspices of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, and during that period the method of transput of the sick and injured has gradually improved until to-day the St John Ambulance Association and Brigade are the possessors of a fleet of four modernly equipped motor ambulances, voluntarily staffed, day and night, by Jghly-tramed and thoroughly efficient ambulance nursing sisters and ambulance men. This humanitarian service has been made possible only through the un•l f ner -^‘ es its members, together with the public support that has heen given whenever an appeal for funds is made. Manv liberal donations to this worthy cause have been received from time to time, and there is no doubt that manv ' be forthcoming .when the public fully realise what the St John Ambulance Association, and Brigade are doing to alleviate human suffering in their midst. ever-increasing dangers caused through fast motor traffic and modern power-driven industries cal! for a ceaseless Vigil on the part of members of tne bt John Ambulance Brigade, so that when a call for help is made on phone _32-2 31 a "White Messenger of Mercy, in the form of an ambulance bearing the cross of the Order of St John, and manned by a competent firstai<i staff, is quickly on the scene, ever ready to render assistance to the sick and injured. This on manv occasions as meant the saving of human lives. iJonations towards the maintenance and running of the free ambulance services of the St Tohn Ambulance Association and Brigade are now being soli cited, and badge sellers are urgently required for Friday next, when a street appeal wijl be made It is hoped
that this deserving cause will receive a ready and liberal response. Collecting headquarters for the day will be in the Chamber of .Commerce buildings
