PROTECTION OF WORKERS

Deputation Makes Requests to Minister. ("Star” Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, November 28. A request that the law relating to workers’ compensation should be amended to provide more protection to workers as far as the settlement of claims was concerned, was made to the Minister of Labour (the Hon A. Hamilton) to-day by a deputation from the New Zealand Workers’ Federation Conference. It was alleged that workers were being forced to accept lump payments in settlement of claims, this course being against their interests. Complaint was also made as to the basis on which waterside workers were placed when computing the amount of relief they were entitled to under the Unemployment Act, and it was suggested that the board and federation should confer and evolve a more equitable arrangement. The Minister gave the deputation a sympathetic hearing and undertook to investigate the matters raised.
