A DIFFICULT PROBLEM.

Burden of Children Under Care of State. Reference to the burden placed on the State through children being committed to its care was made in the Children’s Court this morning when an illegitimate child was committed. It was stated that the mother had had a previous illegitimate child and in neither case had affiliation orders been secured. When the question of further possibilities of an additional burden on the State was being discussed, Mrs T. E. Taylor, J.P., who was on the Bench with Mr H. A. Young, S.M., and Mr W. M. West, J.P , said that nothing could be done to prevent a recurrence of the' trouble. Compulsory action was impossible after the age of seventeen and the only thing that could be done had to be done voluntarily.
