The early contest for seats in the House of Commons for the opening of the new session was more than usually exciting owing to the exertions of four of Sir Herbert Samuel’s Liberal supporters to cross the floor and secure places among the serried ranks of the Conservatives. They and three Conservatives were the first members :o appear in the Chamber at 8 a.m. Mr J. P. Maclay Liberal, Paisley) and Mr W. M’Keag (National Liberal, Durham) have announced that they do not intend to follow Sir Herbert Samuel when he crosses the floor and joins the Opposition.
