OBITUARY.

William D. Lawrence.

Mr William Daniel Lawrence, whose death occurred,, in f hristchufeh yesterday, at the age of :ninftty;four, was for many years .a prominent farmer in the Ellesmere district and was a well-known breeder of Romney Marsh sheep and Shorthorn cattle. He was born in Carmarthenshire, South Wales, and was the third son of Dr Henry Lawrence. He abandoned the idea of a military career, and in 1864 came to New Zealand in the ship Derwentwater and went as a cadet on the Hon Robert Daly's run at Dtinsandel, where he remained for four , years._ He subsequently took up land on his own account at Dunsandel, Sedgemere, and the well-known property, Ravensworth, Leeston, which he farmed until 1891, when he disposed of it and retired to live in Christchurch. His property, after large sums had been spent in,drainage and other important improvements, became known as the best grazing land in the Ellesmere district. Mr Lawrence was a large breeder of sheep and Shorthorn cattle and was instrumental in raising a stud flock of Romney Marsh sheep. He took an active part in public affairs in the Ellesmere district, being prominently associated with the early history of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association, of which he was the first secretary in 1871, later holding the position of president. He seldom missed attending an annual show and was present at the one held in October last. He was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace in 1873. Patrick Adair. The death occurred on Saturday morning at his residence, Hapuku, Ka’ikoura, of Mr Patrick .Adair, a wellknown resident of the district for over forty years. The late Mr Adair was born in County Donegal, Ireland, in 1865, and came to New Zealand in 1883, landing in Wellington. ..Mr Adair retired some years ago to his present residence at Hapuku. He was keenly interested in all sports and was a vice* president of the old Kaikoura Racing Club and also president for some years of the Kaikoura, Collie Dog Club. For many years he was a member of the local Oddfellows’ Lodge. He was married in Kaikoura in 1880 to a daughter of the late Mr Samuel' Bassett. There are three sons, Messrs Patrick, Henry and Tom Adair, and three daughters, Mrs D. Ashby (Kaikoura) and Misses Elgra and Doris Adair. George Crowley. He was a prominent figure in insurance and financial circles. His age was sixty-nine.
