NOT THIS YEAR.

Revival of Regatta at Lyttelton. PROBLEM OF FINANCE. A proposal to revive the Lyttelton regatta -on New Year’s Day was rejected at a meeting of those interested held in the Lyttelton Borough Council Chambers last evening. It .was contended that the time was inopportune in view of the nearness of the Sanders Cup contest, which will be held at Lyttelton in- February. The Mayor, Mr W. T. Lester, presided over the meeting, which was attended by about a dozen people. Mr Lester explained that the meeting had been called at the request of the Outboard Club. Mr ,J, G. -Simpson, secretary of the Outboard Club, said that the outbbard regatta was usually held at Akaroa, but this year the club was considering holding it at Lyttelton. . His- club wished to know if it could get the support of the Lyttelton people. Mr M. J. Scott asked if it would not have been advisable for the club to have first consulted the Canterbury Yachting and Power Boat Association. Mr Simpson said that the meeting was really held to ascertain the feeling of the other sports bodies. It was desired_ by his club to start a movement and induce other bodies to participate. Mr C. E. Brown, president of the Canterbury Yacht and Motor-boat Club, said that it was unlikely that the Rowing Association could participate, as the date had already been allotted to the Akaroa regatta. Lyttelton would like to see the regatta revived. Mr G. Curtis said that the Canterbury Yacht and Power Boat Association had control of all regattas held by its affiliated clubs and arrangements for a sailing regatta at Lyttelton would have to be carried out by it. The association had tried for years to revive ' the regatta, but without success.. Money was the obstacle. Replying, Mr Simpson said that no difficulty had been experienced, in financing the outboard regattas held at Akaroa for the last three 3-ears. If they wanted to attract all the best boats in New Zealand the clufcr would require at least £IOO. Mr Scott said that if the people spent too much money on the regatta on New Year’s Day it would be difficult to raise funds for the Sanders Cup contest. Next season would 'be a more opportune time to -consider the proposal. Mr A. G. Sinclair moved that, in view of the nearness of the Sanders Cup contest, the sailing clubs take no action. The motion was seconded by Mr G. Curtis and carried.
