LYTTELTON DISPUTE.
Trouble Over Unloading of Cumberland. Fresh labour troubles occurre'd on the Federal steamer Cumberland this morning. Both the ship’s hands and railwaymen attended for work at eight o’clock, but shortly after making a start the men made a demand for overtime, payment for the men who •were not -ordered back last night. This meant that about one .hundred men would have to be paid the extra time. These men did not start work, and later the whole of the men downed tools. The railway hands also made a demand at 8 a.m. for payment for idle time lost yesterday afternoon between 3.30 and 5 p.m. Work was resumed at 9.30, the demand for overtime having been withdrawn. At 10.45 the Railway Department, having declined payment for lost time, which amounted to an hour and a, half, the railwaymen stopped work. The hatches were ordered to be put on and the ship was closed up for the day. As the vessel had little more cargo to handle at Lyttelton, her agents decided to dispatch her for Port Chalmers and she left at 12.55 p.m.
