SPRINGS DISCOVERED.
Record of Seventy* five Years Ago. It has not been definitely decided, but most things point to this year being Hanmer’s jubilee. Records in the possession of Mr P. M’Manaway suggest that they were “ opened ” in 18S3. They were discovered seventy-four years ago. The following is taken from a copy of the “ Lyttelton Times ” dated April 20, 1859, and appears under the heading “Boiling Springs”:—We have received a most interesting communication from Mr William Jones, dated St Leonard's (Waiau River), April 8, in which the announcement is made of the discovery of hot water springs in the Hanmer Plains, nearly at the foot of Jollie s Pass. Another gentleman. Mr D. Duppa, acquaints us with having inspected t lie springs and gives some further details of the phenomena.
