LOCAL ELECTIONS.

Triennial Poll Proposed in New Bill. “ Star ” Parliamentary Reporter. WELLINGTON, November 3. A triennial instead of a biennial election of borough councillors and mayors is proposed in future, and a consolidation of the Municipal Corporations Act introduced in the House today contains the necessary amendments covering the change in relation to these elections, which are to be held on the first Wednesday in May. If, on the constitution of a new borough, the mayor is elected within six months of the usual date of the triennial election, the Bill provides that he will hold office until his successor is elected at the next succeeding triennial election. The filling of extraordinary vacancies in the office of councillor is subject to new provision. If it occurs within twelve months of the date fixed for the next triennial election, the council will have power to fill the vacancy by the appointment of a person qualified to be elected as councillor, but if the vacancy xs within six months of the election the council may determine not to fill it. The first triennial election is to take place on the first Wednesday in May, 1935, though if as a result of the constitution of a new borough an election had taken place within six months prior to the above date there will be no necessity for another election.
