BOXING CONTEST.

Percy Hawes to Meet Clarrie Rayner. The twelve-round professional feather-weight contest between Percy Hawes and Clarrie Rayner, which will be held in the St James Theatre next Thursday night, should be one of the big sporting attractions of Cup Week. Previous contests between I-lawes and Rayner, last season, provided the cleverest and brightest boxing seen here for many years. Rayner was the outstanding boxer at the recent amateur boxing championships, where he won the amateur feather-weight title. Hawes is the holder of the professional featherweight title. The boxing of both Hawes and Rayner is marked by remarkably fast hitting, and each has the ability to turn defence into attack by the speed and strength of his blows. The Christchurch Sports Club is fortunate in securing this contest, which is considered, in boxing circles, to be the best professional match available in New Zealond at present. Several good amateur preliminaries have been arranged With men from H.M.S. Dunedin, as well as a six two-minute bout between Norman Fisher (Canterbury amateur feather-weight champion) a fid A. J. Hawes, whose recent fight with Fisher provided the best contest of the championship tournament. Day sales are at Lange’s, where the box plan will open on Tuesday morning.
