REMARKABLE SCENES.
Thrills and Romance in “ Hell Below.” A wide range of entertainment is covered in ” Hell Below,” which began a return season at Everybody’s Theatre to-day. Produced with the full co‘ operation of the United States navy, ‘ Ilell Below ” contains remarkable scenes of under-water warfare. and combines with these thrills a glamorous romance and a lai-ge element of rollicking comedy. It is doubtful if more stirring naval battle scenes have been enacted for the screen, and the film may be said to convey a fairly faithful impression of what modern warfare Mould really be like for the men in the submarine fleet. The terrific battle episodes have no relation to anything that happened in the Ureat War, and n }? vc impressive on that aetount, as they show to what an advanced stage the scientific side of modern warfare lias been developed. The torpedoing of ships, anti-aircraft operations, the blowing up of a fort and bottling up of a harbour, and a dramatic escape from scores of depth bombs, are among the spectacular scenes. The under-water photography is remarkably clear, and a vivid panorama is presented of an enemy destroyer scattering depth bombs while steaming above a submarine seventy feet below the surface. The cast outstanding, and the honours are shared by several favourite stars. Robert Montgomery, as a dashing naval lieutenant, who is fearless both in oat tie and in love, gives one of the finest performances of his career. He provides most of the romantic element with beautiful Madge Evans. the daughter of his commanding officer, and their strange love affair is splendidly interwoven with the stirring battle scenes and the humorous work of Jimmy Durante and Eugene Pallette. M alter Huston, as the commander of tiie submarine, stern but just, and fearless unto, death, has one of the most Important roles, and he enacts it with distinction. / Box plans at The Bristol.
