APPEAL RAISES £225.

S.P.W.C. Disappointed With Result. An objective of £SOO was set by the organisers of the annual street appeal for the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, yesterday. The day realised £l9O. With the addition of sums that had been collected previously the total raised reached approximately £225. It compared favourably with last year’s total of £lB4, but it was nevertheless a disappointing result to the organisers, who had put a tremendous amount of work into the appeal. “The trouble is that it is a littleknown society,” said Mr H. Sweney last evening. “It’s work is done behind the scenes. We are very grateful to those who assisted us to-day, either by collecting or in other ways; but we could have done with more collectors, and we hoped for a better response, particularly with the city as busy as it was.” There was one contribution of a £1

note, but the rest of the collection was made up of small silver. The stalls did poor business, only a few pounds being realised from this source, and generally the response did not repay the efforts made. As illustrating some of the work entailed Miss Cardale, secretary of the society, sent out over 1000 letters concerning the appeal. The appeal was conducted yesterday from the Navy League rooms, where the treasurer (Mr H. Grant) and his assistants established themselves, and where morning and afternoon tea was served to the collectors. On the west side of Victoria Square a marquee had been erected for the sale of cakes, sweets and general goods. The stallholders were: Cakes, Mesdames G. Billcliff, M. Emmett, J. ’Blackabj'; sweets, Mrs T. Tomlinson and helpers: variety, the women's auxiliary of St John Ambulance, with Mesdames W. Hurrell
