N.Z. CUP HORSES.

No. 6—Takakua. Bav gelding, five years, by Royal Divorce from Outlet by Provocation. Weight including-51b penalty 7st 71b. Owner, Mr J. Jameson; trainer, B. Burgess (Opaki).

Takakua has the distinction of being the only penalised horse in the New Zealand Cup. He did not race at two years and only thrice in the next season, but he has now had thirty starts, lie has been placed in twenty of his races, winning ten, running second eight times and third twice. In prixemonev he has won £lOls. After running unplaced twice at three vears, he was second to Irish Chieftain in the Trial Stakes at the Trentham July meeting. He paid a visit to Riccarton at the outsit cl his four-year-old season and was unplaced in the Cashmere Plate. Two more unplaced runs and he won the Maiden Stakes at Woodville on Februarv 22. Two seconds intervened before he won twice over six furlongs 1 at Napier Park on March 4. A week later at Masterton, he registered a third and a first over seven furlongs. He next was successful in the Ngaio Iligh-weight mile at Trentham. At Pahiatua early in April, he ran unplaced over a mile and 110yds, but won over seven furlongs. At Feilding the same month, he captured the Orepuhi Hack, one mile and J a dis tance, and the Oroua Hack Cup, one mile and a quarter. With 8.6 he was second to Fairway 7.13 in the oodville Jubilee Cup, one mile and a quarter, on May 27. He was third in the Foxton Cup and unplaced in a seven furlong race there.

Takakua this season began with an unsuccessful trip to Riccarton, being unplaced twice over six furlongs. At Foxton on September 30, Foreign Queen conceded him lolb successfully over seven furlongs, and Equitant gave him 51b and a beating over six furlongs at Otaki on October 6. On the next day, he was again second, t'ais time over nine furlongs, to Plateau 8.1. Takakua also had 8.1 and Brambletorn was third with 8.6. A week later Takakua won the Masterton Handicap, one mile and a quarter, with 7.12 from Chopin 5.3 and La Poupee 7.9, with Brambletorn 8 0 fourth. At T rentham Takakua 7.6 and Brambletorn 7.11 ran a dead-heat for second, lust behind Cricket Bat, in the Wellington Handicap, eleven furlongs. On the second dav Takakua won the Trafalgar Handicap, one mile and a qurter, with 7.12, from Aga Khan 7.10 and Tout Is Monde 7.5. Shatter 8.2 was fourth. Brambletorn 8.1 fifth. Eminent 8.1 sixth, and Chrvsologv 7.8 eighth and last. With 8.9 Takakua faded in »e, mile Pearce Handicap on Labour Da v . An improving gelding who has not been over-raced and who is evidently not averse to a bit of distance Takakua is likely to have his share of admirers. No. 7—Palantua. Bav mare, four years, by Paladin from Mantua bv Solterino. Weight 7st 21b. Owner Mrs W. M Kenzie. trainer F. Shaw (Wingatui). Palantua at two years ran second in a juvenile handicap at Wingatui and third in a novice at Oamaru. These were her only starts. She was out twenty times last season and had a good record embracing eight wins, four seconds and a third. Second in the Cashmere Plate, she had her maiden success in the \ auxhall Handicap, dx furlongs, at Winganui in August. She scored again at the same course in October. Her next placing* were seconds at Wash dyke and Gore. These were all sprint races. At Riverton last Easter, she won over six furlongs and finished third over seven. In April she won over six furlongs at Washdyke. She scored twice over that distance at the Dunedin winter meeting and over seven furlongs at Ashburton in June. With Sst 131 b, she won over a mile at Waimate in July from Mount Boa 9st and Red Boa 7st 131 b. With 9st lib she was beaten by Water Power 8s Sib over one mile and 35 yards at Washdyke. Palantua this season began by running unplaced in the Winter Cup. She then won the C.J.C. Islington Handicap, one mile and a quarter, with 7st from Cricket Bat Sst 31b in 2min 6 2-ssec. She finished very well. In the mile C.J.C. Ileathcote Handicap, she was third with 7st 101 b to Cricket Bat Sst 111 b and Ramo 7st. She won over six furlongs at Oamaru on September 30. In the Ranfurly Handicap, one mile, at Wingatui on October 7, Palantua Sst 71b was in front at the distance with Irish Lancer and Polydora 9st lib. She then weakened and Polydora won. At Gore on Monday, Palantua Sst 131 b was beaten half a head by Sailing Home Sst 71b over eight and a half furlongs, but on Tuesday she won over one mile and a quarter with 9st 41b from Cough 7st lib and The Smuggler Sst 131 b. ! Palantua's complete record is 29 starts, 11 wins, six seconds, three thirds and nine times unplaced, with £978 in stakes. Her sire. Paladin, was a son of Polymelus. Her dam, Mantua, herself a good performer, was by Sblferino from Rose Salterne by Rokeby (son of Rock Sand) from Rosella by Seaton Delava] from Roie (sister to St Hippo) by St Leger from Ilippona by Robinson Crusoe.
