TOPICS OF THE TURF

Tf'IXAL payments for the Xew Zealand Cup, Stewards’ Handicap, Welcome Stakes, New Zealand Derby and Oaks are due on Monday. * * * * Acceptances for the minor events to be run at Riccarton on Xew Zealand Cup day close at 8 p.m. on Monday. * * * * The Takapuna Jockey Club will race on December 2 and 4 instead of November 30 and December 2. STAYERS IX HER FAMILY. The Xew Zealand Cup candidate Speedmint belongs to a family which has produced some good stayers. Her granddam, Serita, was a half-sister to Lady Cilia, dam of Gasbag, who won the Canterbury Cup in record time, the Great Northern Derby, Wellington Handicap and other races. Seritas sire Cardigan won the A.J.C. Metropolitan. Lady Cecilia, dam of Serita, was a half-sister to Artillery, winner of the Canterbury Cup, to Strathmore, winner of the Victoria Derby and V R.C. St Leger, and to Hilda, dam of the Auckland Cup winner An tares. She was submitted on behalf of Mr R. E. Clements, of Dargaville. at the Trentham sales of January, 1930, and was sold for 45 guineas. AX ALL-ROUNDER, Quinopal, who won over eight and a half furlongs on the flat at Gore on Tuesday, has also been successful this season over fences at Riccarton and over hurdles twice at Wingatui. ROCKET INCIDENT. The Rocket incident at Trentham, when there was an official inquirv into his form after he had won the Pearce Handicap on Monday, says the “ Dominion," brings up a subject that is causing a good deal of discussion in racing circles. It was fairly obvious that in the Victory Hack Handicap on Saturday Rocket got a very bad passage. That being so one may well ask, why was no inquiry held there and then? Waiting till he won on the next day, and then giving his win an official coat of whitewash, appears merely a waste of time, besides being distinctly annoying to the connections of the horse, who would have welcomed an investigation on Saturday. At the moment, also, our stipendiary stewards appear to be suffering from a “ crossing ” complex. While not suggesting that the incidents did not merit inquiry, it may be doubted if, in some cases, they would warrant more than a word of warning. There is plenty of scope for racing supervision, and any tendency to make mountains out of molehills is to be deprecated. A LITTLE BRIDGE. Two-year-olds racing in Melbourne this spring include My Partner. Two Over and Last Rub. They are all by the Tetratema horse Fourth Hand, who was raced in Australia by Lord Somers, then Governor of Victoria. POLYDORAPolydora gave herself a slight knock yesterday. She did three-quarter pace work on the inside this morning and seemed all right. She will probably be galloped to-morrow. * * =t= * Mr V. Riddiford will have two representatives at the C.J.G. Metropolitan meeting—Eminent and Forestry. They will come to Riccarton in the charge of their trainer, S. J. Reid.

F. Davis is due to arrive here on Saturday with Red Manfred and the t two-year-old Pin Money. * VOITRE'S PLANS. ; K. Voitre has accepted engagements for the Auckland spring meeting ,on ' November 4 and 6, but it is expected that he will be at Riccarton for the 1 last two days of the C.J.C. meeting. His mounts at Ellerslie will include Whenuakura and Red Sun. RETURNING TO FORM. Lack’s performance in beating all . but Porotiti on Monday in his second , start of the season is an indication ; that he is returning to form. Lack i was a brilliant two-year-old, winning the , Welleslev Stakes and the C.J.C. \\ e l- ; come Stakes. He did not do a great deal of racing last season, but he showed all his old pace on occasions, and now that he has struck form again he will be a valuable second string to the stable champion. Golden \\ ings. * * * * A. 11. Eastwood’s engagements ior Riccarton include Loronilla in the Welcome Stakes, Silver Streak in Gie Stewards’ Handicap and Rocket in the New Zealand Cup. CAN HE DO IT AGAIN? One of the matters racing men in Melbourne are pondering over just now concerns James Scobie and some of his training achievements. In July. 1923, Bitalli, hitherto a maiden performer, won South Australian Tattersall’s Cup, two miles. He was not produced again until the Melbourne Cup in the following November, and he won that also. The Melbourne Cup of 1927 was won by Scobie with Mr E. E. D. Clarke's Trivalve, a son of Cyklon. These two items from Scobie’s repertoire bring up the question of Petau. Like Trivalve, Petau is a son of Cvklon and is owned by Mr Clarke'. Also Petau until October 7 was a maiden. Then he beat 2/ opponents, including many Cup hopes, in the Stand Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Flemington. Petau is a four-year-old with only 7st to carry. Scobie has trained four winners of the Melbourne Cup, namely. Clean Sweep, King Ingoda, Bitalli and Trivalve. He considers Petau is a good horse and Melbourne punters are wondering whether once more, Scobie will saddle up the horse that really matters on the first Tuesday of November, 1933. It has been stated that the veteran, R. Lewis, would ride Petau. Lewis is still a light-weight, but he cannot manage 7.0 and the Adelaide jockey, R. Medhurst, will be in the saddle. MOTUKAR AR A TR A INS. In connection with the Banks Peninsula races on Saturday, a special horse train will leave Christchurch at 9.40 a.m. and Sockburn at 10.28 a.m. It will stop if required at Middleton, Ladbrooks, Lincoln and Greenpark to pick up passengers, also where required to j lift horses. A special passenger train ; will leave Christchurch at 11.15 a.m. It is due at Motukarara at 12.13 p.m. and is timed to begin the reUirn journey at 5.40 p.m. RAXGTORA SET EXAMPLE. A feature, of a well managed meeting at Rangiora on Monday was the closeness with which the club managed to run its programme to schedule time. It set an example in this regard worthy of imitation by a number of South Island clubs. , PAID FOR TRENTHAM WIN. Silvox, who has not raced since the Dunedin meeting, twice finished in front of Southdown at Wingatui. In the mile October Handicap, Silvox finished too strongly for Southdown. Each had 7.13. Again in the Guineas, Silvox finished well to run second to The Masquerader, with Southdown fourth. Southdown last week won the Trentham Stakes, beating Red Manfred. In the nine furlong Riccarton Handicap, Southdown has been allotted 9.0. Silvox has 8.2. Other three-year-olds handicapped for this event are The Masquerader 8.6 and Nightly 8.0. HORSES FOR COURSES. On the last occasion that a spring meeting was held at Akaroa—that is on October 31, 1931—Jaloux won the Akaroa Handicap with 8.0. Ranelagh 8.1 and Minerval 7.0 were among the unplaced runners. The trio is engaged again in this event on Saturday. Jaloux has 7.5, Ranelagh 8.9 and Minerval 8.7. Ramo has shown a liking for Motukarara by twice winning the Peninsula Cup, which is run there in the autumn. Monastic has won twice at Motukarara and he was also successful at the club’s meeting at Riccarton last year. ANOTHER SUSPENSION. A. Tinker, rider of Grand Score, who won the Bruntwood Hack Handicap at the .Waikato Hunt meeting at Cambridge on Monday, was subsequently suspended for one month for crossing and careless riding. AUTOPAY HOME. - Autopav returned to Wellington by the Wanganella on Monday. 11 is near hind hoof was severely injured wher he was galloped on in the Flying Ilan dicap at Randwick on October 14, and he is not likely to race again for some time. WORTH WATCHING. Courtega, who nearly brought off i big surprise in the Spring Novice Handicap on Monday, was making hei first appearance in a race, so her per fcrmance, after losing ground at the start, was distinctly promising. Cour tega is a chestnut three-year-old fill} by Grandcourt from Tigritiya, a bril iiant sprinter and winner of the Auck land Railway Handicap. Courtega i a half-sister to Te Keroke and Arvada Gold Ruler, Royal Bengal and Tigei ism belong to the same family, MOTUKARARA RIDERS. Additional riding engagements fc the Banks Peninsula meeting on Sa urdav are: W. Hogan, Elude; H. Doi ovan, Minerval; A. Messervy, Sal Smith, Haere Tonu, Variant an Water Polo; C. E. Eastwood, Fin Weather, Golden Dart and Swee Agnes; 11. Turner, Errantry and fra ford: W. ,1. Pascoe, Tea Garden; A. I Eastwood, Liege Lord, Silvptc. Pal J land. Heather Glow and Lady Zephyr
