Mr R. J. Murphy (Wellington) is staying at Warner's Hotel. Messrs D. IT. Woodward, C. Monro and A. W. Press (Wellington) are guests at the United Service Hotel. Mr J. J. Duncan has been appointed manager of the new department store of J. R. M’Kenzie, Ltd., in Wellington. Mr W. G. de Gruchv, the Sydney director of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, arrived in Wellington by the Wanganella on a business visit. A Westport telegram says that Mr Walter Atkin, 54 years of age, one of the proprietors of the “ Westport News,” died last evening after a brief illness. Messrs G. Kennedy (Taihape), A. Nelson (Auckland), F. Cruthers (Te Aroha), T. Sampson (New Plymouth) and W. 11. Boys (Invercargill) are guests at the Royal Hotel. Mr Warwick Gregory, New Zealand manager for the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, returned with Mrs Gregory by the Rangitiki after an extended business and pleasure trip to England. Mr IT. D. Garrick, formerly of Christchurch, and now of Ceylon, arrived in Wellington by the Rangitiki. He will remain in New Zealand for three weeks before returning to Ceylon. The Rev A. Miller, an active minister of the Presbyterian Church in Australia and New Zealand for more than 45 years, has left Auckland for Sydney. Mr Miller intends to reside at Chatswood, Sydney. Mr K. J. M’Menamin, LL.B., was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand by Mr Justice Reed yesterday, on the motion of Mr F. D. Sargent.

At a meeting of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association last evening a motion was passed expressing appreciation of the services of the Rev F. T. Read as president during the past six months. Lieutenant E. W. J. Bankes arrived bv the Rangitiki from Home. He will relieve Lieutenant K. M. Walter, as signal officer on H.M.S. Dunedin, and the latter will shortly return to England.

Mr Alan 11. Thom. 8.A., of the Murchison District High School staff, has been appointed to the staff of Wellington College. He will take up his new duties on November 22. Mr E. S. W. Paul, chairman of directors of the Australian Provincial Insurance Association, Ltd., has arrived from Australia on a holiday visit to New Zealand. He intends to make a motor tour of the Dominion.

The Rev J. M. M’Kenzie, of Wellington, is at present visiting Christchurch. On Saturday he intends to be at Rangiora to take part in the borough school jubilee celebrations.

A presentation of a framed photograph of last year’s executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association was made to Mr IT. Fleck, who was president last year, at the halfyearly meeting of the association last evening.

Mr J. G. Vickers, of the head office of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, arrived at Wellington by the V\ anganella on Tuesday from Sydney, lie will be relieving at the Wellington branch of the society for the next 12 months.

Word has been received that Mr C. W. Collins, eldest son of Mr and Mrs William C. Collins, Sumner, is leaving Southampton by the steamer Largs Bay to-dav, returning to New Zealand via Suez, Colombo and Australia. He expects to arrive in Christchurch about December 15 and to take up work at the Canterbury College University library at the beginning of next 3'ear.
