QUEEN CARNIVAL.

Y.M.C.A. Committees Report Progress.

Numerous meetings in connection with the Y.M.C.A. queen carnival were held in the Y.M.C.A. last evening, when reports of the various committees were received.

The Sports Queen Committee reported that plans were well in hand for the big “ father and son ” evening to be held in the gymnasium On Saturday, October 7, when there would be the first appearance of the Boys’ Gordon Hall Harmonica Band and numerous side shows. It was also decided to arrange for a community singing and novelty evening in the Y.M.C.A. on Thursday, October 12.

The report of the Commerce Queen Committee revealed that a number of functions had been arranged, including a card evening at Beath’s on Wednesday, October 11; a bridge evening at the D.I.C. on Tuesday, October 17; and a concert to be given by the staff of Ballantynes, Ltd., in the Y.M.C.A. concert Hall on Thursday, October 26. Instead of holding the garden party on October 21, as agreed to last week, it was decided to have a monster evening in the Y.M.G.A. building on Saturday. October 28. There would be a concert programme, dancing, stalls, and the feature of the evening, a huge fun fair, at which there would be all manner of side ‘shows.

There was a good attendance at the meetings in connection with the Shorts and Gym. Queen last evening, it was announced that, at the opening of the boating season on October 28, permission had been received for the Sports and Gym. Queen to sail down the river in a decorated boat, attended by her maids ot honour. A collection would be taken up along the river bank. A bridge evening had been arranged to be held in the Jellicoe Hall on Wednesday, October 16. It was also reported that numerous private functions were being arranged. For the -Optimists’ Queen Committee, it was reported that arrangements were well in hand for a concert at Sumner to-night, a film of the Southern Alps to be shown on Wednesday, October 11, and a bridge evening to be held in the Merivale Hall on October 24. It was also reported that several small parties were being held. For the Ladies’ Auxiliary Queen Committee, it was reported that good progress was being made with arrangements for the garden party to be held at Stoneyeroft. Mount Pleasant, on Saturday, October 14. Numerous individual functions were scheduled. A competition conducted in aid of the Boys’ Gordon Hall queen was won b.v Mrs FI. ,T. Johnson, Francis Avenue, with Stan Ferguson, Hawthorne Street, Papanui, second.
