“LORD OF THE MANOR.”

Crystal to Show Sparkling

British Comedy.

“ The House Opposite,” a first-class mysterv drama, will conclude its season at the Crystal Palace Theatre on Friday n^A 1 magnificent cast is featured in The Lord of the Manor,” the Paramount British film, which will be presented at the Crystal Palace Theatre on Saturday. It is a screen adaptation of John Hastings Turner’s famous play, which ran for a lengthy season at the Apollo Theatre, London, and was decomedv dealing with English life ever ! written. “The Lord of the Manor” provides the ideal vehicle for Fred Kerr, whost last film it was. and whose recent death cut short a long and brilliant career. Kerr’s portrayals of the deaf i and peppery “ gentry ” have always been appreciated; and in this film be I is said to reach the peak of his acting

powers. This delightful comedy is based on the effects of an imaginary upheaval in the Government on the hottempered Conservative landowner, Sir Henry Bovey. It is suggested by a special committee that large houses like Stagbovey Manor should be used for billeting some of the local unemployed, whereupon a number of them arrive immediately. But Sir Henry cannot forget the traditions of the old country gentleman, and finally declares that they shall not be billeted on him. but remain as his guests. It is easy to see the tremendous possibilities this story holds for Fred Kerr. Supporting him. as important members of the cast, are Betty Stockfeld, the Australian actress, Kate Culter, Harry Wilcoxon and Frank Bertram. Box plans at The Bristol.
