Briefly the Story deals with the search for a vast treasure of plundered gold lost when a iserman submarine was sunk during the Great «ar. The opening scenes depict an encounter between the submarine and a mystery ship in 1917, and the ultimate sinking of the submarine with the loss of all but two lives Cast on an uninhabited island, the survivors the U-boat captain and one of his officers, make a plan showing the spot where the submarine sank with the golden treasure, and some while later when a rescuing ship appears, the captain murders his companion in order that he shall be the only person to have knowledge of the bullion. Years pass and the German captain, now an American resident, becomes master of a ship • bartered .by a scientific expedition. The steps the captain takes in an effort ♦ o recover the gold, his treachery and lust for wealth, are revealed in a number of highly exciting episodes. There is also a pleasing romance arid the conclusion is most satisfying. The photography is of an exceptionally high standard, especially in the under-sea scenes. Particularly remarkable are •oloured close-up photographs of life on the ocean bed and a scene portraying a fight to the death between a diver and a giant octopus. Although thrills and action abound there is nothing grotesque in the film, which is most enjoyable. Popular Fay Wray makes a charming heroine, and playing opposite her is ■Ralph Bellamy. As the unscrupulous captain Fredrik Vogeding. a prominent Continental actor, is all that could be desired. Box plans at The Bristol.
