Unemployment Scheme on Farms. ERADICATION OF WEEDS. (Special to th® ** Star.”) ASHBURTON, October 3. The Unemployment Board has issued advice stating that labour is being made available to farmers for the eradication of ragwort on similar conditions to those in operation last year. Where local authorities are prepared to act as employers of men for this purpose, registered and eligible unemployed will be made available to farmers for full-time work of not less than five days per week (no stand-down week) under scheme No. 5 “over the fence.” and the board will provide a subsidy at the rate of 30s per week for married men and 10s for single men. In the event of any man refusing to accept this class of work, the local authorities are requested to give them no further relief work under the board’s schemes. Lodge Meetings. The C.R. (Brother W. H. Amos) presided over a meeting of Court Ashburton, A.0.F.. held last evening. Sick pay amounting to £ls 0s 6d was passed in favour of six members. The Hibernian Society wrote accepting an invitation to a cards match on Monday week. Members of Court Dunsandel visited the Court and were welcomed by the C.R.. who also extended a welcome to Brother T. S. Clayton, who attended for the first time for several months after a serious illness. A meeting of the Success of Ashburton Lodge was held last evening, when the AD. (Sister T. Eyles) presided. A committee was appointed to draw up the 1934-35 social syllabus. It was decided to invite the brothers to attend a hard-up social to be held next Monday week. Labour Day Gala. Last evening Mr S. M. Cassidy, convener, presided at a meeting in connection with the stalls and side-shows to be conducted at the Labour Dav Gala. The honorary organiser, Mr S. Mitchell, and the general secretary, Mr G. V. Furby, also attended. The chairman reported that he was receiving splendid support in arranging for several stalls and side-shows. It was decided that several new attractions be included on the programme. The Women’s Institute has consented to take charge of the cake stall, and Mrs James offered the gala the use of her stall at the Domain for the day. The offer was accepted with thanks. Women’s Missionary Union. At the annual meeting of the Girls’ Auxiliary of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union last evening, the Rev R. S. Watson presiding, the following officers were elected:—Honorary president, Mrs R. S. Watson: president. Miss C Turnbull; vice-presidents. Misses E. M. Bonnington, B. Jary and Mrs W. J. Moore; secretary, Miss L. M’ltv tosh; treasurer, Miss Jean Smith; M.M.8.L., Misses C. Stevenson, A. Clark and M. Jary; social committee. Misses P. Shaw and J. Blackwood: room and flower committee, Misses E. Wilson, M. Parker, E. Good and R. Welch; buying committee, Misses E. M. Bonnington, C. Turnbull, E. M’Elhinney and A. Silverwood; organists, Misses A. Silverwood and P. Shaw. Shorthand Examinations. Advice has been received from Pitman’s Examination Department, Melbourne, that the following pupils from the Sacred Heart High School (Ashburton) have been successful in shorthand examinations:—Speed certificate, eightv words per minute: Moira M’Donnell, Eileen Hyland, Patricia M’Sherry, Kathleen Hickey; theoretical certificates, Theresa Hanrahan, Glenis Fitzgerald.
