AID FOREX-SOLDIERS

Allocation for Imperial and N.Z. Men. DECISION OF R.S.A. EXECUTIVE. A decision to allocate the subsidies for the relief of unemployment on the basis of 70 per cent to New Zealand returned soldiers and 30 per cent to Imperial men was reached at a meeting of the executive of the Christchurch R.S.A. last evening. The voting was six in favour of the motion and four against. The full text of the motion was: "That where the amount of money available is not sufficient to give a fair percentage of work to New Zealand soldiers it be allocated on the basis of 70 per cent to New Zealand and 30 per cent to Imperial men, and that the Canteen Fund Board and the National War Funds Council be advised to that effect.” It was stated that actually it would make little difference to the distribution of the money. Mr T. Drummond raised the point that the money made available for relief in this way was raised in New Zealand on the understanding that it was to be applied to New Zealand soldiers. Members stated that the Canteen Fund Board and the National War Funds Council had laid it down that the New Zealand men came first and that relief in other directions could be granted at the discretion of the administering body. Mr H. Fleck said it was more than possible that a decision on these lines would result in a split in the association. The chairman, the Rev F. T. Read, and Messrs Chisholm and A. L. Emerson asked for their votes to be recorded against the motion. The report of the employment officer stated that the registrations for the week ended August 19, were 323 and to August 26. 332. New registrations were 17. Subsidised work for those periods cost £34 13s and £35 4s 9d respectively. Seven men had resumed their normal employment.
