ARMED SAILORS HOLD CITY

United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. ST PIERRE, August 27. Rioting by the populace as a protest against the imposition of taxes by the Governor resulted in the rushing of two warships to the port and the occupation of the city by armed sailors. A number of citizens have been arrested and sailors are patrolling the streets. The Governor’s action was taken in disregard of a vote of protest by the elected members of the Government Council. The Island of St Pierre, near the south coast of Newfoundland, is a French possession. Its area is ten square miles and its population 3000. Since July, 1921, the St Pierre group and the adjacent Miquelon group have been under the control of a governor, assisted by a consultative council of administration and municipal councils. The islands, being mostly barren rock, are unsuited for agriculture. The chief industry is cod fishing. The local Budget for 1930 was:—Receipts, 15,317,890 francs; expenditure, 15,317,890 francs.
