THE ROYAL AND ANCIENT GAME O F GOLF

8Y

“THE COLONEL”

Football kept a good many golfers on the “ otherwise engaged ’’ list on Saturday, but Sunday's almost perfect conditions were enjoyed by full complements at all clubs. There was just enough wind to make things interesting. Shirley players will rejoice with R. A. Wilson on his win in the Invercargill Club’a championship. Bob was a steady man here a few years ago, and Shirley lost a strong lance when he went south, Percy Alliss, ’the English pro. who won the German open this year lor the fifth time, was for some years professional at the Berlin Club. Of 190 competitors in the Leeds Professional Tournament, forty used hickory shafts. The Aga Khan possesses a niblick with a blade like a battle-axe, which he calls “the giant-killer”, and a famous legal luminary used a 1 wavs to call his niblick “Faith”, because, as he delighted to explain to his friends. Faith can move mountains. “Fobbv” Jones calls his putter “Calamity Jane”. The Royal and Ancient Club’s appeal for linguists to assist the foreign competitors in the last British open championship brought in nearly 1000 applications. One lady claimed to he able to speak six languages “fluently". What is *the Jfcule f An extraordinary happening is reported from the course of the Malayan American Plantations. Ltd., at South Kedah. Tn a four-ball, .T. Firth Fletcher drove from the second tee, and, believing the ball to be out of bounds, drove another. Both balls were in bounds, however. They were together in grass about three or four inches high. The sevond ball was resting actually on top of the first ball, leaving onlv a small portion of the first ball visible. The facing hillside is open to view from tee to green, and there was no one else in the vicinity at the time. *.♦ fj A Valuable Pot. The “ Tatler ” relates that the ladies of a certain golf club iad been competing for one of their chief po‘s, but when, the presentation ceremony drew near, an awkward hitch occurred. The previous holder confessed that she had forgotten to bring the trophy with her. “Never mind,” said the resourceful lady captain. “A great friend of mine lives quite close. He’s got cups for all sorts of things. I’ll borrow one which we can use for the presentation ceremony, and the real one can be handed to the winner later.” So a cup was hastily borrowed, the presentation Ceremony went off beautifully, and then the blushing winner thought she would glance at the inscription on the cup. It read: “For the best fat heifer in the show.” ♦.* Umpire Tournament. Australasia made a poor show in the annual Empire Tournament, played over thirty-six holes against bogey at Walton Heath (London) on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 11 and 12, for the Lucifer Golfing Society Cup. It was the sixth of the series,' and proved ‘.he most successful of all. A scratch player, N. K. Garnett, hailing from India, with a wyd of 3 up, >-»k fust place, thus once again proving that, especially over an extended restthe double figure marker, getting only a three-fourths allowance of strokes, has only the outsidest of chancest against the cracks. In the list in “The Times’’ the only Australian name given is that of O. H. O'Brien, the well-known Sydney golfer, who, playing off the 10 mark, finished three down. Australians in Dr G. R. Nolan (15), square, and E. J. Tait (IS), two down, played well on the grst day. So did G. P. Roberts (N.Z.). (3), for a square card. & !*• M Championships of Australia. The season’s practice and preparation in all the Australian States will culminate in the contests for the national championships to be played on the Royal Melbourne Club’s splendid twin links at Cheltenham at the end of this month and during the first half of September. The great events are the open and the amateur, and in addition there are the professional and the women’s and the foursome titles to be won, but ike foursomes are not taken seriotffcly, and no one cares a straw who wins them (comments the “Australasian”). They are items .placed on the championship list long ago at the instance of Norman Brookes and the late W. J. Carre Riddell, who could not see why there should not be doubles events in golf as well as in lawn tennis. There are no such contests held in either Britain or America. Christchurch Club.
