A GOOD OUTING.
Enjoyable Arthur’s Pass Excursion. Though winter sports were almost out of the question at Arthur’s Pass yesterday, the 170 excursionists who made the railway trip there had a thoroughly good time. The sky was slightly overcast during the day, but j the sun shone frequently and conditions were warm and pleasant. It was a day out for the tramping element. All the walks were well patronised, among the most popular being those to the Bealev Glacier and to the Devil’s Punchbowl falls. Those who climbed to the Temple Basin skiing ground were not disappointed, though few of the excursionists had brought skis. The ground was mainlyoccupied by persons at present holidaying at the Pass. Disappointment awaited several excursionists who had either brought or hired toboggans, for there was no snow at all in the Pass, and no good runs could be obtained. Tobogganing on the ski-ing ground is forbidden, as it endangers the ski-ers. Several parties of climbers made ascents of Arthur’s Pass peaks during the day, and found snow and weather conditions excellent. Three Canterbury Mountaineering Club members scaled Mount Philistine, another three went up Avalanche Peak, a third partyclimbed the B’Limit. A fourth party of three, which left the train at Cass, could not reach the top of Mount Misery owing to mist and fog.
