Southland Team Beat Wairarapa. FORWARDS IN FORM. (Special to tlie “ Star.'') MASTERTON, August 26. The Wairarapa and Southland teams met at Masterton this afternoon under good playing conditions. The Southland forwards were the biggest pack from Southland province seen in action in the Wairarapa, and they appeared to be much heavier than Wairarapa in the vanguard. Southland kicked off against the sun and within a minute had an unsuccessful kick at goal. Southland had the better of play for' the first quarter of an hour. After two Southland back rushes Sharpe potted a goal. Southland 4, Wairarapa 0. A brief Wairarapa attack, in which Smith, Keeble, Howard and Devine were prominent, was followed by two Southland hack movements. whi : h gained considerable ground, hut broke down when looking dangerous. A couple of great line kicks by Hemi eased the pressure for Wairarapa. Southland forwards were pushing Wairarapa all over the field and continually obtained the hall in the scrum, though faulty handling spoiled their efforts. For more than half of the spell Southland did most of the attacking. Wairarapa broke away on one or two occasions, hut Wise, who was a source of weakness to Wairarapa, let them down badly. Outside of Howard, who was consistently good in following up. Smith, Devine and Keeble were the only ones in the Wairarapa pack who played up to representative form. Southland backs sped away in a passing rush, which broke down, but was later carried on and from which Martin scored. Purdue failed with the kick. Southland 7, Wairarapa 0. Wairarapa opened the second spell with an attack from which Hemi was nearly over. Continuing the attack the ball went to Nunn, to Wise, to Fitzgerald. The game ended: SOUTHLAND * 15 WAIRARAPA 11 Canterbury B v. Ashburton. (Special to the " Star.”) ASHBURTON, August 26. A good passing movement by Canterbury backs carried play to Ashburton quarters, where French made an unsuccessful attempt to kick a penalty goal. Canterbury launched several attacks on the Ashburton goal line, but the solid tackling of the opposition prevented them crossing, and play settled down in neutral territory. At this stage Canterbury were awarded a penalty kick, but French’s kick went wide. Another attempt- a minute later met the same fate. Canterbury forwards carried play to the Ashburton line, and H. Milliken scored well out. The kick at goal by French missed. Canterbury B 3, Ashburton 0. Canterbury backs got away and French broke through and passed to Pawson, who scored. Good work by Hendry and Pawson transferred play to Ashburton quarters, but the defence was sound, and play hovered in neutral territory for some time. Eventually the Canterbury backs got possession, but Whiting cut in and raced for tire goal line, where he was held up, but passed to B. Doig, who crossed for a try. Davison failed to convert. Then the Canterbury forwards took over and concentrated in thte Otago twenty-five. J. Ollivier tried two penalties from well out, but they were short. The first try came from Maxwell, the Canterbury first fiv'e-eighth, who short-punted and followed up fast, after good work by the forwards, and Duff in particular. Ollivier converted. A penalty right under thte posts on half-time gave Ollivier a chance, and he put it over, making the score Canterbury 8, Otago 0. Otago opened up the game in freer fashion in the second spell, and it was not long before they had their reward. The ball travelled right along the line and out to Talbot on the wing. His speed took him over for a good try. The kick failed. Again the Canterbury forwards swept up the field and Otago were kept defending. Price and Harding figured in a. rush that ended in another try beneath the posts, which Ollivier converted, to give Canterbury the lead. 13-3.
