Gatherings Held in Town and Country. GIFT PARTY FOR BRIDE. To honour Miss Doris Jamieson, a gift afternoon was given by Miss Bernice Spencer at her home in Opawa. The afternoon’s programme included games and competitions, which were won by Mrs Jamieson and Miss Elsie M’Lean. Those present included: Mesdames Spencer, Jamieson, Poulton, Miller, Ingham, Kerr, Smith, F*riar, Crowe, Walsh and Vincent; Mbases Doris Jamieson, Bernice Spencer, Smith* Elsie M’Lean (Dunedin), H. Harris and M. Vincent. Papanui Progress League’s Social. The “ hard-up ” social held by the Papanui Progress League was an enjoyable gathering. Many of the costumes showed great ingenuity. Miss Andrew and Mr H. Harris won the Monte Carlo dance, and Mr T. Mavne provided the music for the dancing, and Messrs R. Gates and Sibbald played extras. Mr J. Noble was M.C. A song was given by Mrs Sibbald. Miss M. Andrew gave a tap dance, Mr E. A. Smith a monologue, and Mr J. Sibbald and Master Dave Sibbald, accordeon solos. Dance at Papanui. A dance was held at St Paul’s Schoolroom, Papanui, on Tuesday, in aid of the funds of St Paul’s Church. The Rev W. H. Orbell presented the prizes for competitions to Mrs Derrett and Mr J. Pepper. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mr Hookham and Mr Schumacher. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mrs C. Smith and Mr W. M’Causland. Mr F. Comyns was pianist. The evening was arranged by Mrs E. Blair and Mr E. W. Worsdell. Social Evening. A social evening was held at the residence of Mrs Graham, Matson’s Road, on Monday night, to augment the funds of St Giles spring flower show. Games and music were enjoyed. Those present were: The Rev E. Bandy and Mrs Bandy, Mr and Mrs Macdonald, Mr and Mrs Gibson; Mesdames Graham, Greig, - Wilson, Shaffer, Keith, Winter, Tillman, Mulholland, Donaldson and Dow; Misses Bandy, Dailey, Green (2), Williamson, Bailey, Mulholland and Beckett;. Messrs M’Kenzie, Charlesworth (2), Armstrong-, Smith, Barnard (3), Manhire, Stewart and Wright. Donations were received from Mr and Mrs Crowe, Mr and Mrs Dailey and Mr and Mrs Shirlaw. Farewell Party. On Wednesday evening a pleasant time was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs T. Cusack, Martin Avenue, Beckenham, in honour of Mrs L. C. Buckenham, who has been staying in Christchurch. Mrs Buckenham left on Thursday evening for Whangamomona, North Island, where she will live in future. The evening was spent in dancing and community singing. The music was supplied by Miss Lila Eldridge and Mr B. Smart. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs E. Andrews, Mr and Mrs M. Wilson, Mesdames L. C. Buckenham, W. Smith, R. Reid, Misses D. Myers, L. Eldridge, M. Sim (2), L. Brook, E. Stevenson, C. Smith, S. Petrie, M. Barson and M. Birchfleld, Messrs S. Bancroft, B. Smart, P. M’Gee, A. Bellamy, B. Maloney, A. Bridge, L. Gaudin, H. Sinclaii', J. Donovan, K. Swainson, S. Morris, W. Smith, J. Efcirnard and G. Dodd. West of England Society’s Dance. The West of England Society held a social evening in the Orange Hall on Thursday, when Somerset stories, items and dances were enjoyed. Miss E. Clark and Mr M. Hahn won the statue dance. Items were given by Miss K. Claydon (song). Miss Nicholl (humorous sketch), Mr Salisbury (sketch artist) and Master Desmond Lodge (song). Mrs L. M’C. Bailey played for two extra dances. Mr F. Comyns was pianist, and Mr C. W. Oliver was M.C. Surprise Party. On Saturday evening, members of the Marewa Basket-ball Club and their friends arranged a surprise party for one of their team-mates. Miss Catherine Dymond, Awatea, Kilmore Street. During the evening, instrumental and vocal items were given .by the party. Wiss Nancy Daniels was accompanist. Messrs Harold Gray (tenor guitar), Selwyn Martin (ukulele) and Howard Johns (ukulele) gave items. Games, competitions and dancing were enjoyed, and supper was served by the hostess. Those present were;—Misses Catherine Dymond, Gwen Collins, Molly Grieve, Betty Brook, Gladys Laine, Nancy Daniels, Margaret Adams, Daisy Gill, Jean Christie, Lily Blows, Nell Glass, Louie Cameron and Mabel Allen; Messrs James Wood, Howard Christie, Maurice Jacobs, Desmond Lagan, Stanley Clarkson, Eugene Boland, Jack MacDonald, Phillip Randall, Fred Squires, Eric Foster, Ray Simes, Gerald Lohrey, Harold Gray, Selwyn Martin and Howard Johns. Surprise Party at Lin wood. On Wednesday evening a surprise party visited the home of Mr and Mrs E. Diehl, of Linwood, in honour of Mrs Diehl’s birthday. Many musical items were given by guests. Games, competitions and dancing were also enjoyed. Supper was served by the hostess. Those present were:—Mr and Mrs A. E. Diehl. Mr and Mrs C. Diehl, Mr and Mrs J. Trainer, Mr and Mrs Bates, Misses Winnie Bates, Rene Diehl, Grace Bates, Mabel Diehl, Hazel Bates, Ena Diehl, Messrs Walter Bates, Edwin Diehl, Robert Moore, Jack M’Cleary, Jack Bates, Russell Goodchild, Clyde Birclifield, Norman Hulg and Jack Social at Addington. There was a large attendance at a flag “ 500 ” and dance held on Thursday evening under the auspices of the Addington Public Library Committee, in the Dickens Street hall. During the evening a musical item was contributed by Mr Grubb. The supper arrangements were in the hands of the ladies of the Library Committee, and music for dancing was contributed by Miss Gentles. Mr R. Flintoff was M.C. Prizes were won by Miss Jones and Mr and Mrs Hartigan. Twenty-first Birthday Party. A delightful surprise party was held recently' in Rickerby’s Hall. Papanui* to celebrate the coming of age of Harry ; Richard Harris, Veitch’s Road. Papanui. J About seventy friends and relations were present. A beautiful cake, decor- j ated with twenty-one candles, was cut by the guest of honour. Mr Glen presented the customary key, and the

usual toasts were honoured. During the evening items were given by Miss Winders M’Mullan and Mr Ray Gibbard (tap duo), Mr A. Keen (humorous monologue). Miss Bessie Dini, Messrs A. Keen, R. Foster and R. Gibbard (sketch). Games and dancing completed a pleasant evening. Mr R Deidrichs was at the piano. Those present included:—Mr and Mrs T. Glen. Mr and Mrs A. Rhodes, Mr and Mrs C.
