Pike, a Game of Golf, and Phar Lap. How high is the opinion held of Phar Lap by J. E. Pike, who rode him so often, was disclosed in a conversation which took place on a Sydney golf course recently. “Cardigan,” of the ‘‘Sydney Sunday Sun,” went a-golfing with Pike and obtained two things—a game and a story for his paper. There is nearly always something to mar a perfect day for the golfer. In “Cardigan’s” case, it was the golf, for Pike was 5 up with 4 to plav. Let “ Cardigan ” tell the rest of the story: As he sank a long one for a win on the eighth, Pike said: “ You fellows on the papers often write about the great horses of the past, but in my experience I’ve only seen one out-and-out champion—Phar Lap. He could do any-thing and beat any horse I have ever ridden over any distance at weight-for-age.” “ What,” I said, “do you mean to say that he would have beaten Winooka on last Doncaster day over six furlongs?” He played his shot deliberately before answering, and, as he stooped to recover his peg, “ Perhaps, if the two were in a .big field, Winooka would beat him up to a mile, but match them and Phar Lap would have Winooka covered at the end of two furlongs. Once he was balanced no horse could live with him. “ His greatest performance was his Futurity Stakes win. He was as fat as mud, and he moved out of the barrier at a hand canter. I could see the field streaking away in front of me, and it was not until the five furlongs that he commenced to stretch out. And how did he go! Strain of Race. “ I had to go round every horse in the race, and on the turn was wide out, but he gathered them up at the distance and won well. It was a great win, but it told its tale, and I doubt whether he ever quite recovered from the strain of the race. “At any rate it was my impression that he was hardly as good afterwards. . . . Just fancy that ball bounding through the green. It only goes to show you that you should play the right club. Playing golf is like training horses, you’ve got to place ’em to be a success,” EQUIPOISE WINS AGAIN. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.. CHICAGO, August 25. Equipoise won the twenty-five thou-sand-dollar Hawthorne Gold Cup by two lengths. Gallant Sir was second and Mr Khayyam third. RACING FIXTURES. August 26—Hawke’s Bay H.C. September 2—Taranaki H.C.
