Ex-sharebroker Obtained £l5O by Fraud. SIX CHARGES ADMITTED. “ Deliberate frauds of this nature must be prevented if possible,” said Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, when sentencing James M’Millien M’Andrew, aged 51, described as a sharebroker, of Point Chevalier, to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Accused pleaded guilty to five charges of obtaining a total of £l3O 10s from Frances Elizabeth Haste by falsely representing that he was the owner of a farm at Chertsey. Accused also admitted a charge of stealing £2O from Charles Alexander M’Kay, by failing to account for the money to the Bell Hill Gold Sluicing Co., Ltd. Chief-Detective Carroll said that Miss Haste was a single woman, whom ‘accused met some time ago. They became engaged and accused obtained the money by representing that he was interested in a farm at Chertsey and needed the money for it. He obtained approximately £l3O from complainant and then disappeared. lie was located at Auckland and was charged at Wellington with obtaining £2O in a similar way. He was now serving a term of three months’ imprisonment for the crime. The money stolen from Miss Haste represented practically her life savings. Accused was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment on the charge of stealing £4O and on each of the other charges to six months’.
