CYCLING NOTES.

(By

"WHEEL."

Bert Green's win in the Technical Cycling Club’s road race was well deserved. Although this is his first placing. Green has been prominent throughout the season and was unfortunate in failing when in a handy position in a previous race. D. Martyn is now in form and should ride well in the fifty miles championship next Saturday. AV. Dreaver rode a strong .race and was only beaten into third place by more experienced riders. * X. M’Greedy is shaping particularly well. He should be prominent in future races. For pluck and determination this game young rider has few equals. E. O’Xeill rode another great race to secure fastest time from the 2imin mark. Since taking up the sport success has come his way in leaps and bounds. O’Xeill has only to improve his sprint to be one of Canterbury’s foremost amateur riders. Bill Green rode bis usual solid race to win the club’s Derby championship. In the run for the line he beat his ex«everaieie f ‘°* marker * c - M'Alister, by Every week 'sees larger fields competing in cash road races. East week’s event attracted the largest field seen this season. The Paparua Club’s course was in splendid order. A. Clemence, the winner, rode a splendid race from start to finish. Although in receipt of a start of 3min he covered the course in time which was only 51 sec- slower than that registered by Len Hill. This is the second win recorded by Clemence this season and he is showing consistent form. Although only a young rider, he is without doubt a coming champion. M. A nnett, second place, caused a surprise by finishing so close up. The 4min off S;nVin d ‘ 1J On® Saturday** he rode off 3min and was only beaten in the last few yards. A nnett. who hails from Templeton, is a real “ dark horse.” His ride was the more meritorious when the fact that at one stage of the race he was left and had to pick up his comarkers is taken into consideration B. F. Beat he m, third place, has done little racing during the past few months. Although his racing career extends over a period of several years, he has not: won any big road events. h. W. Hill, who gained fastest time, has done little racing during the past few months. He will have to show better form if he wishes to gain chamwc°eks liP llonours during the next few

O. Farmer, T. M. I.ohrey and L. G. F.eming teamed well and narrowlv missed gaining fastest time honours, being only 22see slower than Hill. only have won the rare but would also have gained fastest time. The table below gives a comparison of the riding times for the five laps, each five miles, as ridden by the winner. Clemenee (3min), and that recorded by Hill (scr), who gained fastest time:—

The Mairehau Sports Club will bold a thirty miles road race at Mairehau next Saturday afternoon. The event will start at t lie corner of Briggs and Hills Roads at 2.30. The prizes are: First prize £l. second 10s, third ss, fastest time ss. The fifty miles Canterburv amateur championship will be decided next Saturday. Owing to the complications regarding the Umatcur control of cycling, the entry will, no doubt, be affected. Tt is questionable whether the race will be fully representative of the amateur r Canterbury. J. H. Macliirus, riding off the llmin mark with his co-marker, K. Karn.it iana, finished nearly 2min in front of T. A. Grose (3Jmin). who filled third place in the Papanui Club's amateur race last Saturday. Machirus, who won, has done, a considerable amount of riding during the present season and has shown steady improvement. Kara it iana, who finished second, has been due for a win for some time, but fails over the final stretch. On the form shown by him during the past few weeks he promiles to develop into a useful road rider. Grose rode his first race since his disqualification last March. The ride showed that he has kept fit. He made a good showing and should reach championship form before the road season

<Qo ses. 11. W. Richards lias not been so prominent this season as in previous years. On Saturday, however, he proved his worth in no uncertain manner by defeating: liis co-markers, A. .T. Ranc-aster and R. B. Blakeway. Richards rode the distance in time that was only 32s»*c slower than that registered by X. Berry (scr), who secured fastest time honours. X. Berry and M. F. Pearl continue to team well. Only a narrow margin separated them at the finish. Berry is improving as the season advances and should prove a serious opponent for Frank Grose for championship honours in the “ Round * the Gorges ” race. Pearl is also retaining his form, but he is not good enough at the finish. The annual sports dance in aid of the Waimate to Christchurch road race will be held in the Caledonian Hall on Thursday next. The function promises to be a great success. The dispute between the amateur bodies in Christchurch will, no doubt, have an effect on the coming big road races. There seems to be no immediate prospect of a settlement. In the opinion of the writer, had the control been left as it was years ago, when the amateur side of the sport was controlled by the Xew Zealand Amateur Association and the cash cycling by the Xew Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, there would have been no split amongst the amateurs to-day. Since the advent of the Xew Zealand Cycling Federation the control has been unsatisfactory owing to the' fact that the powers of the federation have never been properly defined. Amateur and cash athletics are at present under separate control and both sides, especially the amateurs, are making progress and are free from disputes. L. G. Lukey, late of Amberley. the ex-amateur road champion, is training for the Waimate to Christchurch race. FIXTURES. August 26—Fifty miles Canterbury amateur championship. August 26—Road race at Mairehau. August 26—Otago road championship. September 2—Thirty miles Canterbury; championship. September 16—Paparua road race l (cash). September 23—Southbridge road race. September 23 —IOO miles amateur race. October 7 Waimate to Christchurch October 11—Paparua road race.
