IMPORTS OF FRUIT.

Increase of Duties Suggested. Per Prep? Association. AUCKLAND. August 23. In evidence before the Tariff Commission Auckland citrus growers asked that a dutv of twopence a pound be placed on 'all lemons, grapefruit and marmalade oranges imported into the Dominion, that an embargo be placed on all citrus fruits from countries where fruit fly was known to exist, that a duty of 50 per cent ad valorem be placed on citrus fruit pulp or juices and citrus skins in brine, and that a duty of 30 per cent British and 50 per cent foreign be placed on fruit juices, including citrus, in all sized containers or in barrels. On behalf of the Keri Keri growers it was asked that a duty of twopence a pound be placed on all overseas fresh passion fruit and a duty of 3s 6d a gallon or 25 per cent, whichever was the higher, on all overseas passion fruit pulp or juices. On behalf of Auckland tomato growers it was asked that import of tomatoes be prohibited from fruit fly countries, that a duty of 3d per lb be placed on imports other than from the Dominion’s Island dependencies, from which imports should be prohibited after September 1 in * each year, and that the present duty on tomatoes in brine be maintained. Finally it was

asked that the duty on cucumbers, peas and beans in pods be 3d a lb or oO per cent, whichever is the higher. Application was made on behalf of L nited Glass Bottle Manufacturers, Ltd., of London, for admission into New Zealand duty free of all glass bottles having a capacity exceeding one fluid ounce. It was suggested that a tariff of 35 per cent should be imposed on foreign manufacturers and 20 per cent on Australian. Representatives of the Australian Glass Manufacturing Company wished the commission to increase the duty from 25 per cent to 30 per cent British and 50 per cent to 60 per cent general.
