STATEMENT DENIED.

A statement made by Mr F. W. Freeman in opening his campaign in the Lyttelton by-election last night, that last year the Government paid out as part of contributions to social services £439,130 from the railway sujierannuation fund, was contradicted this morning by Mr J. Roscoe, representative of the railway officers of the South Island on the Railway Superannuation Board. Mr Roscoe said that this payment was not made by the Government. The money was paid out of funds contributed by the employees and employers in the Railway Department. The same applied to the £170,000 paid out from the funds of the working railway department.
