“OFF THEIR LEGS.”
Wellington Too Fast for Southland. LIVELY SECOND SPELL. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 24. Southland were run off their legs in the second spell yesterday, when the fast Wellington backs had the wind and sun behind them and grabbed every opportunity that came their way from loose or tight. The score at half-time -was three all: at full time it was Wellington 38, Southland 11. A feature of the play was Fuller’s goal-kicking. He converted seven tries, all in the second spell. Southland, for the most part, put up a dogged fight, and their forwards in particular played a vigorous game, though, when the pressure was on,
they were not equal to quicker-think-ing opponents. Southland were held in the first spell, though it was hard, even slogging. After half-time Wellington began to develop their* characteristic type of open game and then there was only die team in it. Southland saw sufficient of the ball to have held their own with Wellington, but their movements lacked design and finish, while their handling was poor. Southland’s defence fell away and, as well as being out-generalled, they were out-manoe-uvred by the speed of the Wellington backs. TTie Flay. Berry scored the opening try for Southland, but Killeen soon equalised for Wellington, outpacing the Southland defence after Lilburne had short punted with a positional kick. There was no further scoring until the second spell, when Killeen again showed exceptional speed to beat the Southland backs in a race for the ball. Fuller converted. Fuller then rounded off a Wellington passing movement by scoring and converting. Tries wens added in quick succession by Dellabarca and* Robins, Fuller converting both. Kilby then opened up a nice movement for Dellabarca to score agani and Reid touched down from a forward rush. Fuller converting both tries. Sharpe kicked a penalty for Southland which Robins followed up with a good try in the corner after all the Wellington backs had handled, Fuller again converting. The final try went to Southland when a penalty kick by Sharpe hit an upright and rebounded into play and CJeorge touched down in a handy position. Sharpe converting.
