DOLLY VARDEN HATS

Popular Style at To-day’s Races. MANY GAY COLOURS. Riccarton racecourse to-day attracted thousands of sporting enthusiasts from all over New Zealand, and the scene was a gay one. Though “ sport’s the thing ” on such an occasion, the social side of the meeting was also extremely important, especially from a woman’s point of view, and the grandstands and lawns proved a happy meeting ground for friends from all over the province, and even from farther afield. Mild nor’-west weather favoured the sporting of new spring fashions, an opportunity that no smart woman could resist. Tailored suits and coats had appealed to the majority as a suitable and smart choice for this meeting. Checks, both in the large “ crow’s foot ” variety and in the smaller “chicken’s foot,” were definitely in favour and looked extremely effective made into smart costumes and coats. Brown and white, brown and mustard, and blue and white were all popular colour combinations. The hats this year were sufficient in themselves to delight any woman’s heart. One of the most becoming styles was a modification of the Dolly Varden hat, worn well on one side of the head, and turning up smartly at the back to reveal rows of intriguing little curls. Another truly feminine note was the use of scarves of white organdi tied in big white crisp bows in front. Most women, in order to be forearmed against any sudden changes in the weather, either wore, or carried fur coats or other warm wraps.
