CLIMBERS HURT.

Slipped on Snow on Mount Egmont. WERE ROPED TOGETHER. Per PrAss Association. NEW PLYAIOUTH, August 7. An Alpine accident that might -easily’ have had more serious consequences occurred on the north Egmont summit track yesterday afternoon. Five members of a party of seventeen which was returning from the summit slipped on the crusted snow at about 7000 feet. The climbers fell about 300 feet down the hard snow slope, bumping over rocks on the way, and suffered scalp wounds and abrasions. They’ were pulled up by the soft snow lower lown. Other climbers were handy and gave first-aid and the party reached the north Egmont hostel between six and seven o'clock. The five climbers concerned, who were all roped together, were:—Aliss Nancy Gannaway’, Auckland, cuts above the right ey r e and abrasions. Rod Sy r me, Hawera, cuts and abrasions. Alorton Jones, New Plymouth, injury to the right arm. Desmond Ryan, Ilawera, scalp wounds and general abrasions. * Kenneth Jobkm, Inglewood, cuts on the right hand and abrasions. Dr D. E. Brown, who was at the north Egmont hostel when word was received and who attended the injured persons on the track, sent Aliss Gannaway', Jones and Ryan to hospital. Aliss Gannaway will require about a week’s treatment and her head will be X-ray-ed. Jones's arm will also be X-rayed.

The accident was caused when Sy r me, who was the anchor of the rope, slipped. The party had nailed boots, an ice axe each and rucsack complete with warm clothing, food and bandages, in fact, full Alpine equipment.
